Perhaps the most eccentric Novosibirsk actor and director Oleg Zhukovsky told how his theater survived the first winter in the Central Park pavilion, shared plans for staging Swan Lake and explained why Barabinsk is better than Edinburgh.
Actor, director and choreographer Oleg Zhukovsky returned from Germany to Novosibirsk in 2012 for a reason. He brought his own theater La Pushkin to our city. Experimental, innovative, avant-garde - it is called differently, but this does not change the essence of this amazing phenomenon.
The theater already has its own audience and its own premises in Central Park, a repertoire and tour schedule have been formed.
Novosibirsk News managed to catch Oleg Zhukovsky almost at the plane on which he was flying to Dresden for the theater festival, and asked him about how the theater survived the first winter in the new building, about the patrons of this city, about the nightmares of producers, and also about how performances are born and die.
You moved into the pavilion in Central Park last summer. Last winter was your first in a new place. How did you survive the winter? video clip 
La Pushkin Theater opened in Central Park- Great. I have accumulated a genetic hunger for frost. I am a Siberian for ancient generations, and I constantly miss it, so I feel comfortable here.
- How did you arrange your “Art Barn”? Did someone help you or did you do everything yourself?
In my previous location in the Grass loft, I did everything myself, but the management of Central Park helped me with this, providing some of the building materials.
A lot of work has been done here - a new roof and a new porch, full insulation and interior cladding. There are three thousand screws alone. In the evenings, I then conducted free trainings on plastic surgery, and during the day, the training participants helped us renovate the premises. We managed to complete everything quite quickly - within a month and a half.
- Were those venues that you had before the Art Barn better or worse?
Worse. But I would also like to transform this room. For example, lower the floor by a meter. Or remove at least three columns located in the center of the hall and supporting the roof. There is such technology, but it just requires additional money. We need to run water. And, probably, all this construction is unlikely to ever end. In the current economic situation, it is impossible to expect the construction of any cultural complexes.

We tour a lot, and where we come, we are sometimes offered to stay and promised long-term projects. For example, you can move to Tomsk even today. They call, they offer any space, workshops, rates.
- Aren't you tempted?
- Besides Tomsk, what other cities did you go on tour to and how were you received there?
It was received very well in Moscow and St. Petersburg. There we played almost the entire repertoire. IN Nizhny Novgorod we showed "Kharms" and "Peter and the Wolf". There was simply an incredible, open public in Alma-Ata.
- What is your audience like? Can you draw a generalized portrait of your viewer or is it impossible to generalize?
Our audience is not theatergoers. These are people who are able to go beyond the standard of perception. read also

There are a lot of them. There are many more of them than those who go to the theater. Only 5% of the population goes to theaters.
But you have your own audience, and it cannot be called wide due to the fact that the material is not easy to understand. But according to my personal observations, despite the fact that the “text” of your performances is quite complex, children perceive it well. Let it be somehow in their own way, differently, but they perceive it.
They do this directly, because we are going through some kind of cultural allusions. We are planning to tour the region with the play “Peter and the Wolf”. To Barabinsk, for example, or to Ordynka.
In Germany, I once happily took part in the village theater festival “Landscape Festival”. There they can hold an exhibition or a symphony concert or a theatrical performance in the field. There we played “Peter and the Wolf” surrounded by combine harvesters. People had no idea what theater was at all. They are adults, but like children. They received us wonderfully, fed us, gave us water and thanked us for having such artists on their farm.
Therefore, I need to travel around the region, but so far I can’t find people interested in this. There are no sponsors for this yet either.

Returning to your viewer, is there any feedback [ feedback] with the audience? If so, what is the feedback? What emotions? Weren't there people who would teach you about life and say: you're doing everything wrong, Oleg, you're living wrong?
We have a letter box in the theater where viewers leave their reviews. There are not many negative comments. Happened once or twice on the Internet. But time passes, and these people apologize.
- Do they understand?
Fear. (laughs) It’s me who smiles like that with you, but in reality I’m a monster. I understand that one and a half million people in this city are not to blame for anything. Why did I end up here? This happened to me in Edinburgh. When you see people who can buy everything. Actually everything. Any art. The Edinburgh Festival has two thousand performances a day. And what am I playing there? - I thought. Why am I shaking myself when I have Barabinsk, which is not to blame for anything at all?
In Edinburgh we received very good criticism, they wrote very well about us. And with a completely clear conscience we got ready and went. No one from my company supported me. I came here alone, built a new company here, and had a fantastic family here.

Last season, the repertoire included the performance play “Immortelle.” You promised to show it this season, but it’s not on the posters. When will he return?
He appeared when the play “Kharms” died. It was I who buried him so solemnly. Now in the repertoire there is “Kharms”, so there is no “Immortelle”.
To be honest, it belongs to the category of “minus” performances. It is incredibly interesting, experimental and very complex. We played it with a star cast in St. Petersburg with my favorite musicians at the Erarta private theater. There, he and I got into the black, but it was in the summer, when no one played on this site except us.
- “Minus” performances are bad dream for an actor?
For an actor, no. This is a nightmare for a producer. I don’t have a producer yet, and I’m not in this system, so I have to build my own system. We have no overlap with that system; we have different tasks and goal-settings. read also There was a funny situation with Kharms. We had a tour Moscow - St. Petersburg - Alma-Ata. Moscow was the last to sign up for the tour, and there was nothing to send there because the scenery was all gone. And the director advised sending “Kharms” there, which the public didn’t go to see here. Maybe it will go there. And suddenly some kind of bomb happened there, only the applause lasted 35 minutes.
- Can you explain this to yourself or don’t you even try? Maybe some flares in the sun?
This is all clear. Even the simplest performances do not find an audience so quickly.
We have one amazing sponsor - he has a private dental clinic and he treats our teeth. One day, after the performance “Cabaret Orpheus,” which was not difficult for me, he said: Olezha, you know, I travel around the world, but I only understood 30%.
According to him, there is definitely an audience for this performance in Novosibirsk. But, firstly, she doesn’t know you, and, secondly, they don’t go to theaters. There are enough smart people here who can evaluate, understand and feel this material.

At the opening of the Arts Barn, you said that you had plans to stage Swan Lake. Have you given up on your plans?
This idea came to me in Warsaw, where I had a plane connection and needed to spend the day somewhere, sleep at least two hours. One of my friends took me to his theater and gave me a dressing room to sleep. And suddenly it began to rain outside the window, and from somewhere there were seeds in my pocket. In general, when he came for me two hours later, the dressing room was littered with paper written on it. As a result, a dramatization of “Swan Lake” appeared.
This is my ancient dream. It is not canceled, it lives. But this performance requires funds. There I need flying acrobats, water surface. I can already imagine how Siegfried goes hunting and sees a swan with some kind of wild target on his chest. And how feathers fall. video clip 
Residents of Novosibirsk will see a live tiger and ballerinas with weapons in the new version of the ballet “Spartacus”- Besides “Swan Lake”, are there any other plans, perhaps more realistic?
There are many plans, and they are all realistic. I stage performances very quickly, but preparation for them takes an insanely long time. We staged “Cabaret Orpheus” instantly, but it had 800 preparatory versions. In addition to the preparatory process, the stars must also fall into place.
In the summer we plan to stage “The Tale of Lost Time.” For now I can only imagine the combination of light and shadows in it.
I don't even know if there will be text in it. I plan to involve children in preparing the performance. To do this, we will organize a children's theater camp, four seasons in total, during which we will stage the play four times, select the best moments and ultimately put together a full-fledged performance, which we will put into the repertoire. So we will have child actors in our theater.
My friends have been asking me for a long time to make another hit like “Peter and the Wolf.” And so we decided to do the play “Stanislavsky”. The scheme there is the same as in “Love Me,” but only there the characters are not husband and wife with dumplings, but Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko.
