The monument to Admiral Horatio Nelson in the form of a tall column is located in the center of Trafalgar Square in London. Construction of the column took three years - from 1840 to 1843. Nelson died in Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and that is why the sculpture was installed in the London square of the same name. The monument is impressive in size - a 5-meter statue of Nelson is located on top of a 46-meter column. Interestingly, the location of the column is of particular significance - the monument faces south, towards the Admiralty and Portsmouth - the site of Nelson's flagship, the Royal Navy ship HMS Victory.

In 1925, swindler Arthur Ferguson managed to “sell” Nelson’s Column to one gullible American. Ferguson made up a story that the monument was put up for sale because of the need to cover Britain's war loan from the United States. In the same way, he “sold” Buckingham Palace and Big Ben.

Several people worked on this attraction at once. The author of the monument is the architect William Railton; the statue itself was created by a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, Edward Hodges Bailey. In addition, five sculptors sculpted the four bronze panels and four lions that adorn the monument. By the way, the first column of this type was installed in London in memory of the fire of 1666.

In total, it took about $6 million to create Nelson's Column.

The details of the column are very interesting. For example, the top ornament - bronze leaves - was cast from English cannons. The pedestal has bronze panels that were cast from French cannons. The panels depict 4 of Nelson's victories. It took 29 guns from HMS Royal George to make part of the internal foundation. In London's National Maritime Museum in Greenwich there is a model of Nelson's Column reduced by 22 times.

Interestingly, Nelson's Column was a peculiar object of desire for Adolf Hitler. He hoped to make a successful invasion of England and then transport the column to Berlin.

In London's National Maritime Museum in Greenwich there is a model of Nelson's Column reduced by 22 times.

Daredevils have already climbed Nelson's Column several times. As a rule, this was done for advertising purposes or to draw attention to some issue. Ed Drummon was the first to climb the monument in 1979 as part of the anti-racism movement. He used a road lightning rod for lifting.

Nelson's Column was restored seven years ago. Before this, a laser examination was carried out, which showed that the height of the monument is less than thought. In fact, the height of the column is 50 meters, not 56. During preparations for restoration, another one was discovered interesting fact. The fact is that there are always a lot of not only tourists around the column, but also feathered “spectators” - pigeons. At one time, the mayor of London even banned feeding birds near the monument, considering that pigeons were constantly soiling the monument with droppings. It turned out that the mayor's efforts were in vain - the Nelson statue was chosen by swallows, and the pigeons had nothing to do with it.

Stands London's most famous monument: Nelson's Column. The monument was built in 1843 as a tribute to Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, who defeated the French fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Nelson was fatally wounded during that famous battle off the Spanish coast. His body was transported back to London and buried in the St. Paul's Cathedral.

Background

In the 1830s plans for Trafalgar Square, an expansive public square in the heart of the city, started to take shape. In 1838 a committee organized a competition for the design of the crowning piece of the square, a large monument dedicated to Admiral Nelson. A total of 124 entries were submitted, with designs ranging from temples and ship"s prows to monumental statues.

The winning entry was submitted by William Railton, an English architect who up till then was best known for his churches and residential houses. Railton's proposal called for a 52 meter (170 ft) tall monument consisting of a soaring Corinthian column topped with a large statue of Horatio Nelson and guarded by four massive lions. The monument's design was very popular despite concerns about the visibility of a statue at such a height.

The Monument

Construction of the monument started in 1841 and was completed in 1843 when the sandstone statue of Nelson was placed on top of the column.

The Column

The column itself, constructed of granite from Dartmoor, is about 46 meters in height. The statue of Nelson measures 5.5 meters tall, about three times life-size. The statue rests on an elaborate Corinthian capital which, the story goes, was made from the bronze guns of the Royal George, a large warship that sunk in 1782 while anchored off Portsmouth.

The Statue

The statue is carved from sandstone by Edward Hodges Baily, an English sculptor who had taken part in the competition for the monument. His proposal, a large statue of the admiral, ended up in second place. His design was then chosen for the statue that was to be placed on top of Railton's column.

The Reliefs

The death of Nelson

The four bronze bas-relief panels on the sides of the base were added in 1849-1852. They were cast from melted-down guns captured from the French. They glorify Nelson's naval victories.

The panel facing south shows a dying Nelson aboard his ship the HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar. The other reliefs show scenes from the Battle of the Nile, the Battle of Cape St. Vincent and the Battle of Copenhagen. Each relief was created by a different artist.

Statues are a special type of art, which consists of creating images of those individuals who made a special contribution to the history of the development of individual states and the whole world. A large number of The statues are dedicated to military professionals who defended their own country and conquered new lands. One of these outstanding personalities was the Vice-Admiral of the Great Britain Fleet, Viscount Horatio Nelson.

Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson - biography.

Horatio Nelson was born in 1758 into the family of a priest. In Horatio's family, besides him, there were 11 more children; the boy did not stand out among his brothers, he was often sick, and did not show a keen interest in studying. At the age of 12, Horatio joined his uncle's fleet as a cabin boy, who taught him everything he knew about maritime affairs. Thanks to his uncle, the young man went on many voyages on the largest ships and achieved a high naval rank. Horatio's confidence and courage played a significant role in his service. In 1777, Horatio sailed on the frigate Lowestaff and took part in the American Revolution. In battle, Horatio Nelson proved himself to be a real hero, coped with all the assigned tasks with dexterity and saved the lives of others. Already at the age of 20, Horatio became a captain and received command of his first frigate. Nelson also fought in the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic battles. In 1801, Horatio received the rank of vice admiral.

In honor of the great achievements and successful command of the British fleet, as well as in memory of the tragic death of the admiral in the Battle of Trafalgar, it was erected Admiral Nelson's Column(eng. The bust reaches a height of 5.5 meters, the total height of Nelson's Column is 46 meters. The column is decorated with bronze elements and has bronze leaves on its top. At the foot there is a plaque with the name of the author of the column. In 1867, new details were added to the base - four lions.
