RGUPS is the largest educational complex with the strongest teaching staff, a unique educational, laboratory and social base, occupying a high place in the ranking of transport universities in the country and a leader among transport universities Rostov region.
The university is headed by the rector – doctor technical sciences, Professor Vladimir Dmitrievich Vereskun, elected to the position by the Conference of University Workers and Students.
The university complex houses about 20 thousand students of 150 educational programs. The structure of the university complex includes 9 faculties, a lyceum, a technical school, and branches higher education in the cities: Tuapse, Voronezh, branches implementing secondary vocational education programs in the cities: Vladikavkaz, Volgograd, Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Liski, Tikhoretsk, Voronezh, Tambov, Tuapse, Yelets, as well as departments of pre-university training, post-graduate and additional education.
A military training center has been created on the basis of the university, training students to pass military service under contract in military positions, as well as reserve officers, sergeants, and reserve soldiers.

The main form of training of highly qualified scientific and pedagogical personnel in the federal state budgetary educational institution of higher professional education "Rostov State University Communications" are doctoral studies, postgraduate studies and competition.

Currently, the Rostov State Transport University provides training in 31 specialties of higher vocational education and 17 specialties of secondary vocational education and 12 blue-collar professions (license - A No. 282226 dated 05/07/2008, certificate of state accreditation - AA No. 001359 dated 06/23. 2008).
At 8 faculties, in International Institute entrepreneurship and law RGUPS, more than 22,000 students study full-time and correspondence forms training for subsequent work in organizations and institutions of railway transport, transport construction, legal, financial and economic, law enforcement and banking structures, in municipal and government agencies, on manufacturing enterprises and in design, engineering and research organizations. Educational and industrial practice is organized at enterprises in Russia and abroad.
Persons with higher or corresponding secondary education professional education, can study in full-time and part-time forms of study with a shortened period of study (from 3 to 4.5 years) in relevant specialties in individual programs training of specialists (the possibility of entering the university to study under a shortened program remains until August 31, 2009).
High level of training and scientific work The RGUP team is recognized both in Russia and abroad. The teaching staff of the university consists of more than 700 teachers, of which: 80 doctors of science, 400 candidates of science. An important place is given to cultural events held at the Palace of Culture. The following holidays have become traditional: “Day of Knowledge”, “Tatiana’s Day”, inter-faculty festivals of creativity for first-year students “Autumn” and “Spring”. University students take an active part in working life. Student teams of passenger carriage conductors and assistant locomotive drivers have been formed; students of the Faculty of Humanities work as part of a teaching team as educators in children's health camps. Members of the RGUPS construction team work at enterprises and facilities of Russian Railways OJSC.
University students and graduates are in demand in production. The system of distribution and employment of graduates has traditionally been stable and effective at RGUP (every year the university provides employment for about 90% of graduates, taking into account their interests).
The university entered the new millennium renewed. In 1999, in the year of the 70th anniversary of the RGUPS, they were reconstructed academic buildings, laboratory facilities and campus have been updated. A new library was built. In cozy dormitories with hotel-type rooms, all conditions are created for students to study and relax. The university park has been landscaped. In 2008, RGUPS became a university complex: it included 8 railway transport technical schools in the cities of Rostov-on-Don, Bataysk, Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Volgograd, Vladikavkaz, Liski, Tikhoretsk, Kropotkin.
For students full-time, successfully studying in places financed from funds federal budget, a stipend is paid. For the most capable students special scholarships have been established. Needy students are paid a social scholarship.
During their studies, all full-time students are granted a deferment from conscription into military service in the Armed Forces. Russian Federation(if it is provided to a citizen for the first time).
The structure of the university includes the Military Faculty, in which students can receive a military rank (at the same time, according to current legislation, they are not subject to conscription for military service after graduation).
A military training center has also been created on the basis of the university, which, using federal funds, trains officers for military service under contract. Students at the military training center of the RGUPS have a unique opportunity to simultaneously obtain a civilian and military specialty. Recruitment to the RGUPS military training center is carried out according to a separate targeted competition based on the following civilian specialties:

All students studying at the military training center receive additional scholarships in the amount of 1,500 to 3,500 rubles, and nonresident students are provided with a dormitory.
RGUP actively develops international relations. International cooperation is considered today as one of the most important factors in improving the quality of education at the university, creating conditions for development professional qualities future specialists: linguistic internships for RGUP students in France, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and other countries have become traditional; an exchange program for teachers and graduate students with foreign partner universities has been developed; currently, special attention is paid to the implementation of joint educational projects with a number of presenters educational institutions France (Versailles Academy, Sorbonne, University of Le Mans, etc.), which will allow RGUP students to study abroad and receive, in addition to a Russian diploma, a document of international level education.
