From June 30 to August 28, an exhibition of works by contemporary artists will be held in Pavilion No. 13 “Healthcare” of VDNKh as part of the exposition of the Museum of the East. South Korea. Visitors will be treated to works by Korean masters - video art, installations, photographs and paintings. One of the exhibits will be created directly at VDNKh, in front of the guests of the Exhibition.

A series of photographic works by Han Sung Pil will explore the theme of the struggle and combination of the real and the imaginary, the original and the fake. Kang Hyun Goo - author of hyper-realistic portraits famous personalities(Mahatma Gandhi, Andy Warhol, Sophia Loren, etc.). Unlike photography, his method allows you to draw attention to details (for example, strands of hair or wrinkles). Cheon Kyung Woo will present a work entitled "Invisible", based on his personal experience travels to the USSR during the era of perestroika. This is a photo installation dedicated to the events of 1989, when the Korean government allowed free travel abroad after Olympic Games in Seoul.

Kim Gi-chul's installation will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the special sound environment of a shady forest, the silence of which is broken only by falling drops rolling off the leaves after rain. Combining a deep respect for nature with a highly original idea, Lee Myung Ho photographs the trees of Korea against a white canvas, thereby isolating them from their surroundings. The resulting images emphasize the beauty and materiality of the trees, while making them appear flatter. The trees begin to seem unreal, as if inserted into the landscape.

In their works, Miun, the pseudonym of the artist duo Choi Moon-sung and Kim Min-sung, explore the theme of communication between people through the interaction of stage and audience. One of the most striking works presented in the exhibition is Park Sung Gi’s work “An Aggregation - Space 20160507”, which will be created by the author directly in the exhibition space. The artist is known for his desire to express the relationship between nature and humanity through installations from charcoal.

Grand opening of the KINTEX II exhibition complex

More than 70 contemporary photographs, selected specifically for the exhibition in Russia, are united by the main idea - to show the possibilities of photography in studying the image of one of the most closed states. The exhibition is complemented by reportage shots taken by Soviet photographers in the mid-second half of the 20th century, making it possible to show the range of perceptions of the DPRK in different cultural and time contexts.

“Photography is a way to explore the world, including parts of it that are inaccessible. It has always performed this function and even today, despite the ability to quickly cover distances, we learn a lot only through images and accompanying texts. This is especially true for closed states, access to which is limited or impossible for political reasons. But as a result, the image is formed only thanks to the media, often becoming mythologized, and North Korea is perhaps the most striking example of this. Another difficulty is that, even once in the country, it is almost impossible to film there; the person with the camera is constantly being watched. Therefore, authors who decide to say something about the DPRK through photography are forced to look for ways to do it,” commented the chief curator of the Center for Photography. Lumiere brothers Natalya Grigorieva-Litvinskaya.

“(Im)possible to see: North Korea” is the work of contemporary authors, each of whom in their own way solved creative issues within strictly established frameworks. The exhibition includes works by such authors as Wong Guofeng (China), Martin Parr (Great Britain), Philippe Chancel (France), Alice Velinga (Netherlands), Eric Lafforgue (France), Matt Pash (Great Britain), Matjaz Tancic (Slovenia), Oliver Wainwright (Great Britain), Eddo Hartman (Netherlands). All of them visited the DPRK recently, and each of them was able to see the closed society in their own way, focusing on details that are often elusive to the naked eye.

The frame includes seemingly familiar things - architecture, interiors, mass celebrations, group and single portraits, hidden everyday life. But through these stories, the authors explore themes of mass and individual, staged and real, the possibility of editing, and address the themes of frozen time and communication between people.

The exhibition also includes photographs created during the years of friendship between the USSR and the DPRK, when photography played a colossal role in the formation of an ideologically verified image of a “friendly socialist country.” The combination of contemporary and archival materials, revealing similarities and differences in themes, subjects and modes of display, also raises questions about the boundaries of photography and the possibilities of perception. “Such a comparison makes it possible to show how different a role photography can play in relation to ideology. The works of modern authors become a kind of optics for reportage series and reveal new meanings of images,” says project curator Olga Annanurova.

Many of the series included in the exhibition were shown as part of personal and group exhibitions in leading museums and galleries around the world. In particular, the works of Wong Guofeng were presented at the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) (South Korea), De Sarthe Gallery in Beijing, Matjaz Tancic - at the Pékin Fine Arts Art Gallery (Hong Kong), Philippe Chancel and Alice Velinga - as part of the Les Rencontres photo festival d "Arles (Arles, France), Eddo Hartmann - in the Huis Marseille Museum of Photography (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) and the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) (South Korea). Also, the works of Matias Tancic, Philippe Chancel and Alice Velinga were included in the group exhibition " Prospects North Korea" in the museum modern photography at Columbia College (Chicago, USA).
